Cyclocross - "A Dirty Winter Sport" Kansas Style 1974

Okay, I should have known that Mark Winkelman would have the Bicycling magazine and he, so thoughtfully, scanned it and sent me the article. So, here it is. Click on each photo to enlarge, if you feel so inclined. This is Kris in perfect running form. I’m not even sure what bike he is riding. Kris thinks it is a Bianchi. I’m not sure. It was a road bike for sure. Gene Wee on the cover. And here’s the article.

I used Adidas TRX’s with the sides of the soles shaved down before I got my Rivat CX shoes. I used my road bike too. Back then road bikes had clearance for CX tires. All we could get were Clements until you guys started bringing in Barums.

Steve. Thanks for sharing this. It provides a lot of perspective. It’s really important to the future of cyclocross that we understand the past.

That cover font is beyond fresh. Got anymore old school cross articles you’d be willing to scan?
