Tilford ends international reign at Superweek
By Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Hales Corners, WI
The first five races of the 2006 Superweek series had five different winners from five different countries, with the American riders shut out. That was set to end today as a four-rider break, with three U.S. riders, rolled away from the field in the final road race before the NRC criteriums over the weekend. Steve Tilford (Trek/VW Midwest) sealed the deal powering up the finishing climb ahead of Brian Jensen (Jelly Belly), with Brad Huff (TIAA-CREF) and Carlos Valenzuela (Monex) following.
“I just started up the hill hard,” said Tilford. “Luckily it was an uphill finish or Huff would have beaten us all by 200 meters!”
“Tilford put in a good attack,” responded Huff.
The four riders had more than a minute on the field, and stayed away for most of the race, which was active with breaks from the start. “We were the third counter atttack that got away,” said Huff. “Brian [Jensen] made the move first.”
Jensen was strong in the break today, coming off a good win on Monday on the tough Alpine Valley road course. “I had three strong guys with me working really well,” said Jensen. “It took a while for us to get any splits, so we just kept going hard.”
